The Republic of Croatia provides incentives to strengthen and foster connections with the Croatian diaspora, as well as develop encouraging measures for their return and immigration to Croatia. Scholarships for studying the Croatian language in the Republic of Croatia are one of the activities that are implemented by the Ministry of Demography and Immigration.

The scholarship program for studying the Croatian language in the Republic of Croatia aims to teach the Croatian language, familiarise participants with Croatian culture, preserve national identity, promote unity and cooperation, encourage the return of emigrated Croats and their descendants, and facilitate their successful integration into the social and economic life of the Republic of Croatia.

The following individuals are eligible to apply for the Public Call:

  • Members of the Croatian people outside the Republic of Croatia, or their descendants
  • Spouses of members of the Croatian people outside the Republic of Croatia
  • Friends of the Croatian people and the Republic of Croatia who cherish the Croatian identity and promote Croatian cultural unity

Scholarship recipients of the Ministry of Demography and Migration have been among the most numerous participants at CEHAS since its inception. Many of them often choose to stay in Split, start businesses, and establish families.

Scholarship students are accommodated in a modernly equipped student dormitory (Campus dormitory) located near the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Individual participants

An increasing number of people from all over the world are choosing Split as their home. Whether drawn to Dalmatia by love, work, or the desire for a peaceful and beautiful life, they all share a common goal: the desire to learn the language to better integrate and understand the culture and language surrounding them.

I took the basic Croatian course during my Erasmus in Split, and at first I was a bit scared since it was my first approach to a Slavic language. Thanks to my professor’s well-structured course and always interesting materials, managed to make us learn very good basics of Croatian in half a year. I was really surprised by the fact that I actually learned it, but the course was super interesting and engaging.

The Center for Croatian Studies Abroad offers an excellent opportunity to everyone willing to pick up a new language and have an easier time integrating into engrossing Croatian society. Though by the time I joined the lectures I had already mastered four languages, I was astonished beyond all measure by the incredible professionalism and unmatched enthusiasm of my teacher who seamlessly combined listening, speaking, reading, and writing exercises together with fascinating activities to keep all her students invested and entertained. If you are interested in Croatian language studies, CEHAS should be your first choice.

Last summer, my friends and I decided to enroll in the summer school program offered at the Filozofski Fakultet in Split. Their program caught our attention because it offered an intensive language program based on our proficiency level and included various excursions to get to know different aspects of Croatian culture and invited us to explore an island off the coast of Split. This comprehensive program surpassed our expectations! The language professors were excellent, in addition to having a passion for teaching, they were genuinely interested in our language learning journey and met us where we were. The material, the lesson structure, and our professor’s great expertise and passion for teaching made our experience very unique and enjoyable! If we had the chance to reenroll in the course, we would love to join the summer school again!

It’s not just about learning a new language, and it’s not just because Split is a beautiful city—it’s the combination of everything that makes the experience unforgettable.
The land of my grandparents, the study group, the teachers, the Faculty of Humanities, the culture, and the food. Little by little, you start to understand the passing conversations you hear on the streets, and you gradually begin to feel like you belong.

I’ve had a wonderful time in Split also thanks to the Croatian language course. Despite me being a native speaker of Slovak, which is quite similar to Croatian, I was not able to understand the language very well. But thanks to the intensive course with a great professor, now I am able to understand my classmates, neighbours and all people I meet! We do lots of fun activities in a friendly atmosphere. I would definitely recommend incoming Erasmus+ students to at least try learning this beautiful language and see its loveliness for themselves!
