Semestral courses

Semester courses are divided into two terms: Winter Semester and Summer Semester.
Winter Semester begins in late September or early October and ends in late January.
Summer Semester begins in late February or early March and ends in early June.
The Centre for Croatian Studies Abroad (CEHAS) at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split offers:
Croatian Language for Foreigners (HJS)
Croatian Culture and Civilization for Foreigners (HKC)
Language courses are taught at levels aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), ranging from beginner A1 to advanced C2. Every semester offers all language levels and a cultural course taught in English: Croatian Culture and Civilization I or Croatian Culture and Civilization II.

These programmes are open to all interested participants, including:
Scholarship recipients of the Ministry of Demography and Migration,
Students in mobility programmes (e.g., Erasmus, CEEPUS),
Foreign residents in Croatia,
And anyone looking to improve their Croatian language skills.
Each semester lasts for 15 weeks, with classes held three days a week, three hours per session, totaling 140 hours of language instruction and 60 hours of courses in Croatian culture and civilization per semester.

Field trips are an integral part of the course.
Each course is worth 5 ECTS credits, and students who successfully pass their exams receive a certificate confirming their language proficiency level.

Summer school

📥 PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The Summer School of Croatian Language and Culture at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split offers an intensive three-week Croatian language course for foreign participants.
Held during summer holidays (in June or July), this course combines language learning with a rich cultural experience. Since its inception in 2007, the Summer School has attracted many participants from around the world.

The programme is designed for everyone who wishes to:
– Immerse themselves in Croatian culture,
– Expand their knowledge of its language and culture,
– Develop or refine their Croatian language skills.

The Summer School includes:
– Language instruction,
– Visits to museums, galleries, and cultural events in Split and its surroundings during July,
– Field trips and explorations of Split’s landmarks, such as the City Museum, Meštrović Gallery, Croatian Museum of Archaeological Monuments, and the iconic Diocletian’s Palace.

The final day of classes is dedicated to a relaxing outing, such as a guided trip to Dalmatian islands like Vis, Hvar, Korčula or Brač, including learning, sightseeing, swimming, and a friendly atmosphere.
Students who pass the final exam receive a Summer School diploma and 2 ECTS credits.

Online classes

📥 PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

Online classes are available at all levels (A1 to C2) and allow students to learn Croatian remotely, in real time, in groups of 5 to 15 participants.
These classes align with semester schedules:
Winter Semester: late September to late January.
Summer Semester: late February to early June.
Each semester includes 70 teaching hours (1 teaching hour – 45 minutes).
NOTE: The online classes will not be held if there are not enough registrations.

Individual classes

CEHAS also offers individual classes, providing a personalised approach tailored to participants’ needs and schedules.
Minimum of 10 hours.
Class schedules are flexible and agreed upon with the student.

Extracurricular activities

In addition to classes held in modernly equipped classrooms, CEHAS offers extracurricular activities that enhance programme dynamics and allow students to engage with various aspects of Croatian culture.
Activities include:
Field trips are organised at least once per semester, integrating real-world language use with lessons in geography, history, literature, and tradition.
Visits to museums and theatres in Split, one of Croatia’s most significant cultural and historical centres.
The Centre for Croatian Studies Abroad (CEHAS) works with its students to showcase its activities at events hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, such as the Christmas event (Advent na Filozofskom) and the spring gathering (Friendships in May). Students also take part in various humanitarian initiatives. A defining feature of CEHAS is the high level of student satisfaction, with many returning each semester and recommending the programme to others, leading to a consistent growth in enrolment.
